Start a business that suits your lifestyle

Fiona Parsons-Davies has always been creative, making woven beaded jewellery, knitting hats and designing cards in her spare time.

After a period out of work spent caring for her mum and with a home life she describes as ‘chaotic’, taking care of children, grandchildren and pets, the thought of returning to traditional employment was not appealing.

She would much rather the peace and solitude that comes with working for yourself, and so came to PRIME Cymru for support with setting up her own business.

Fiona has now established Beady Eyed Magpie, making bespoke and pre-made woven beaded jewellery and portraits, with unique patterns and Celtic knotwork as her speciality.

PRIME Cymru Development Officer, Caroline Allen, said: “Fiona’s work is beautiful. She’s so talented and there’s something different about her creations.”

Caroline helped Fiona to find ways to fit her business around her busy lifestyle and together with Anna Openshaw from Menter Mon, they helped her to secure a Barrier Grant.

Fiona said: “Caroline has been incredibly helpful with everything. She was always there to talk to and was great at getting me motivated.

“Starting this business is something I’ve thought about for years but left to my own devices I wouldn’t know where to start. Caroline pointed me in the right direction.”

Fiona now plans to expand her business by selling online and in local shops. She also hopes to attract more customers with bespoke pet portraits in her unique beading style.
