‘I’ll work until I’m 70 – I’ve got so much energy’

Staying in work later in life is becoming increasingly necessary for many people. With the state pension age rising and cost of living pressures, a growing number have little choice but to extend their working lives.

However, continuing to work isn’t always driven by necessity alone. Many people actively want to remain in employment, valuing the sense of purpose it brings as well as the benefits to their social and mental wellbeing.

Juliet Serey

Juliet Serey, 61, from North Wales, is one such example. She said: “I’ll work until I’m 70 because I have so much energy and so many skills to share!”

Juliet spent ten years working in telemarketing before being made redundant. She loved her job, excelled in the role, and was keen to find something similar. Despite her experience, she struggled to secure a new position and was determined not to rely on employment benefits.

Her situation changed when she met PRIME Cymru’s Caroline Allen at the Job Centre. Caroline encouraged Juliet to persevere with her job search and helped rebuild her confidence by identifying her transferable skills. They met for coffee, reviewed Juliet’s CV, and worked together to tailor it to job specifications.

Juliet said: “I was really impressed with Caroline and the work she does with PRIME Cymru.

“A lot of people aged 50+ feel like they’re ‘on the shelf’ and without purpose, so what they’re doing is brilliant.”

Juliet has since secured a role working for an insurance broker and hopes to continue her career for many years to come.

Inspired by Juliet’s energy, Caroline believes she would be an excellent fit to share this passion with PRIME Cymru clients as a Volunteer Mentor.

Caroline said: “It was such a pleasure to meet Juliet. Her enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude is infectious.”
