Lively pensioner, Eve Davies is not one to let adversity hold her back.
A debilitating illness for Eve caused early retirement from a responsible nursing post which involved training student nurses.
From her cottage in the picturesque village of Llangwm, close to Haverfordwest, she and her husband have set up Cambrian Routes Ltd., organising and tailoring tours for small parties of visitors.
Utilizing their joint skills to include Peter’s expertise as an ex shipping and transport Manager and working closely together, they draw up itineraries to appeal to a wide variety of tourists with a diversity of interests.
Eve chose the business name as a play on words – based on Peter’s original idea to organise their Trace and Tour holidays. A Genealogist will research clients’ family history, and this will be followed by a tour along routes where the family would have lived and had their roots. This led to the development of other themed tours including Garden Tours, Literary Tours (particularly Dylan Thomas), Saints and Stones, Castles and Heritage. The tours can range from a few days to a few weeks!
The couple’s marketing strategy is not only to attract visitors from Britain, but overseas tourists as well. They have a web site www.cambrianroutes.com and a comprehensive brochure.
Eve says, “Wales offers the visitor so much to see and do; one visit would not be enough. With superb, clean beaches and spectacular coastline, we have countryside untouched by time. We have castles, churches, prehistoric forts and burial chambers; not to mention the Pembrokeshire National Park, which is the only Coastal National Park in Britain and also the warmest! Where else can you take a 186 miles cliff top stroll before dinner?”
Eve admits she was initially apprehensive about setting up the business as she lost a considerable amount of confidence after her illness. She originally thought she would be retired, walking their dogs and taking life easy! It was only after she had visited a Business Breakfast Club meeting and contacted PRIME Cymru that she really felt ready to get back in harness!
